Steps to Distance Calculator: Convert Steps to Miles or Km
Convert step count to distance in km, miles, meters, or feet, or find out how many steps you need to walk a given distance. Estimates stride length from your height and gender.
Estimated step length: 90 cm
Steps to Distance Calculator
Enter a step count to find the equivalent walking distance, or enter a target distance to find out how many steps you'll need to take. The calculator estimates your step length from your height and gender, or you can enter a custom step length.
How step length is estimated
A widely used approximation is:
- Male: step length ≈ height × 0.415 ÷ 2
- Female: step length ≈ height × 0.413 ÷ 2
For a 170 cm male, that gives roughly 35 cm per step (~2,860 steps/km). Individual stride length varies based on fitness, walking speed, and terrain.
Common step goals
- 2,000 steps: roughly 1.5 km / 1 mile (a short walk).
- 5,000 steps: roughly 3.5–4 km / 2–2.5 miles.
- 10,000 steps: roughly 7–8 km / 4.5–5 miles (the popular daily goal).
- 15,000 steps: roughly 11 km / 7 miles (very active day).
Tips for accuracy
- Use the "Custom step length" option if you've measured your actual stride on a track.
- Step length naturally varies with walking speed; faster equals a longer stride.
- Treadmill distance readings and pedometers may use their own default stride length.
Step length variability
Step length varies significantly depending on several factors - estimates from height-based formulas alone can be off by 20–30%:
- Speed: walking faster produces longer strides (up to 20% longer at brisk pace vs. slow).
- Terrain: uphill shortens stride; downhill may lengthen or shorten it depending on steepness.
- Fitness level: more conditioned walkers and runners tend to have more efficient, longer strides.
- Footwear: minimalist shoes and barefoot walking produce shorter, more frequent steps than motion-control shoes.
Cadence (steps per minute)
Cadence is the number of steps taken per minute and is a useful fitness metric:
- Slow walking: ~80–100 steps/min
- Normal walking: ~100–120 steps/min
- Brisk walking: ~120–140 steps/min
- Running (jogging): ~160–170 steps/min
- Running (optimal): ~170–180+ steps/min (associated with lower injury risk)
Calories per step
A rough estimate is 0.04–0.06 kcal per step, depending on body weight, pace, and terrain. For a 70 kg person walking at a moderate pace:
- 10,000 steps ≈ 400–600 kcal (roughly equivalent to 40–60 minutes of moderate walking)
- Heavier individuals burn more calories per step; lighter individuals burn fewer
- Uphill walking and faster pace both increase calories per step
