How to calculate a discount percentage
There are two common scenarios: you know the original price and the discount percentage, or you know both prices and want the percentage. This calculator handles both with the mode toggle at the top.
Finding the sale price (Original & Discount % mode): multiply the original price
by (1 − discount ÷ 100). Example: 25% off $80 = $80 × 0.75 = $60.
Finding the discount percentage (Original & Final Price mode): divide the savings
by the original price, then multiply by 100. Formula: (original − final) ÷ original × 100. Example: $80 -> $60 = $20 saved ÷ $80 × 100 = 25% off.
Adding sales tax to a discounted price
Tax is always applied to the discounted price, not the original. Example: 30% off $100 = $70 discounted price. With 8.875% NY tax: $70 × 1.08875 = $76.21. Enter a tax rate in the optional field to see the final price after tax alongside the other results.
