Dithering (1-bit) Image Converter - Floyd-Steinberg & Bayer

Convert any image to 1-bit (black & white) using three classic dithering algorithms: simple threshold, Floyd–Steinberg error diffusion, or Bayer ordered dithering. Download as PNG.

Algorithm

Dithering algorithms compared

Threshold - every pixel above a luminance threshold becomes white, everything below becomes black. Fast and deterministic, but produces harsh transitions.

Floyd–Steinberg - the quantisation error at each pixel is distributed to its right and below neighbours, so gradients appear as natural-looking noise. The go-to algorithm for photographs.

Bayer - a 4×4 threshold matrix creates a regular ordered pattern. Popular in pixel art and retro computing aesthetics (Game Boy, ZX Spectrum screens).
