Fence Calculator - Posts, Panels & Material Estimator

Calculate the number of fence posts, rails, and panels needed for any perimeter. Supports common post spacing and panel widths.

Fence planning basics

Calculating fencing materials requires knowing your perimeter (total linear feet), post spacing, and the fence style (picket, panel, split-rail, chain-link).

Posts and spacing

Posts are typically spaced 6 or 8 feet apart. With 8-foot spacing, standard fence panels fit exactly between posts with no cutting. Closer spacing (6 ft) provides more strength in windy areas or for taller fences.

Number of posts = (Total linear feet ÷ Post spacing) + 1

Add 1 for the closing post at the end of each run.

Concrete for post footings

Each post should be set in concrete. Post holes are typically 1/3 to 1/2 the post length (minimum 24 inches for a 6-foot fence). A standard 60 lb bag of fast-setting concrete covers approximately one standard post hole (6”×24” deep).

Gate openings

Standard gate widths: 3 feet for pedestrian gates, 10–12 feet for vehicle gates. Deduct gate openings from your total linear footage when calculating panels/pickets, but still count two posts per gate opening.

Permit requirements

Many municipalities require a building permit for fences exceeding 4 feet in height (front yard) or 6 feet (back yard). HOA rules often impose additional restrictions on fence height, style, color, and materials. Check with your local building department and review your HOA covenants before purchasing materials.

Gate width guide

  • Standard pedestrian gate: 36–48 inches wide - accommodates wheelbarrows and lawn mowers.
  • Wide pedestrian gate: 48–60 inches - allows easier passage with equipment.
  • Single vehicle gate: 10–12 feet - accommodates cars and small trucks.
  • Double vehicle gate: 14–16 feet - needed for large trucks, RVs, and trailers.
