How force conversion works

All conversions pass through Newtons (N), the SI base unit of force. Multiply the input by its Newton factor, then divide by the target unit's Newton factor.

Force is defined as mass × acceleration (F = ma). 1 Newton is the force needed to accelerate 1 kg at 1 m/s².

Newton's Second Law context

This converter handles unit translation only - it does not account for the physical relationship between force, mass, and acceleration. Newton's Second Law states F = ma: 1 Newton equals the force required to accelerate 1 kilogram at 1 m/s². 1 kilogram-force (kgf) is the force exerted by gravity on a 1 kg mass at Earth's standard gravity: 1 kgf = 9.80665 N exactly. The kilogram-force is often informally and incorrectly called "kilograms" in everyday speech ("this weighs 5 kilograms of force"). In SI, the kilogram is a unit of mass, not force - use Newtons for force in physics and engineering.
