Drag the corners or edges of the crop overlay to select exactly the area you want to keep. Use the aspect ratio presets (1:1 square, 4:3, 16:9, 3:2) or go freeform. Click Download Crop to save the result as a PNG.
Rule of thirds
The rule of thirds is a compositional guideline that divides the frame into a 3×3 grid. Placing your subject at one of the four intersection points - rather than dead center - produces a more visually dynamic and engaging composition. This is why most cameras and smartphone viewfinders offer a grid overlay option.
Standard crop ratios
| Platform | Ratio | Recommended pixels |
|---|---|---|
| Instagram square | 1:1 | 1080×1080 |
| Instagram portrait | 4:5 | 1080×1350 |
| Instagram landscape | 1.91:1 | 1080×566 |
| YouTube thumbnail | 16:9 | 1280×720 |
| TikTok / Reels | 9:16 | 1080×1920 |
| Photography standard | 3:2 | varies |
| Traditional print | 4:3 | varies |
Resolution after cropping
Cropping removes pixels; it does not create new ones. If you crop a 1200×900 image to a 400×400 square, you have 400×400 pixels to work with - which is fine for web use but inadequate for a 4×6 print (which needs 1200×1800 at 300 DPI). Always start with the highest-resolution source image available when cropping for print.
How it works
Your image is drawn onto an HTML5 Canvas element entirely inside your browser. No upload, no server, no waiting. The crop is computed in real time using pixel coordinates, so what you see is what you get.
Tips
- Drag a corner handle to resize the crop region.
- Drag inside the crop box to move it without changing its size.
- Click and drag outside the crop box to draw a brand new region.
- Switch aspect ratios at any time; the crop snaps to the new ratio centered on the current region.
