What is Lorem Ipsum and where did it come from?

Lorem ipsum is scrambled Latin derived from Cicero's 45 BC philosophical work de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum (On the Ends of Good and Evil). The original passage reads: "Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit…" meaning roughly "Nor is there anyone who loves grief itself because it is grief, and thus wants to obtain it…"

The scrambled, pseudo-Latin form has been used in typesetting since the 1500s, when an unknown printer scrambled a passage to create a type specimen book. It became the industry standard placeholder for printed materials, and later for web and software design. The canonical opening, "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet," has been stable for over 500 years.

Choose a format for your workflow

Plain text works well for design tools and documents. HTML wraps generated paragraphs in <p> elements and list items in a <ul>, while Markdown uses standard paragraph spacing and hyphen bullets. Bytes mode returns exactly the requested UTF-8 byte count, which is useful for testing a database field, API limit, or metadata slot. Exact-size output can stop in the middle of a word.
