Unit Converters

Volume Unit Converter

Convert between milliliters, liters, gallons (US & UK), cups, pints, quarts, fluid ounces, cubic inches, cubic feet, and more. Free, instant, and fully client-side.

Note: US and UK units differ - e.g. 1 US gallon ≈ 3.785 L, 1 UK gallon ≈ 4.546 L.

US vs UK volume units

The United States and the United Kingdom both use names like "gallon," "pint," and "fluid ounce," but the underlying volumes differ. A US gallon is 3.785411784 liters, while a UK (Imperial) gallon is 4.54609 liters: about 20% larger. This also means a UK pint (568 mL) is larger than a US pint (473 mL). When following a recipe or ordering fuel, always confirm which system is being used.

How volume conversion works

Every conversion uses liters as the intermediate base unit. The input value is first multiplied by its unit's conversion factor to liters, then divided by the target unit's factor. All factors are exact international definitions or NIST-published values.

Dry vs. liquid measure

In the US system, liquid measures and dry measures share the same names but differ in volume. A US dry pint = 551 mL; a US liquid pint = 473 mL. In practice, dry cups and liquid cups are the same volume in US home cooking, but professional baking uses weight (grams) rather than volume for dry ingredients to avoid measurement inconsistency. European recipes almost always specify weight for dry ingredients.

Medical volume units

In clinical contexts, 1 mL = 1 cc (cubic centimetre) exactly, and these terms are used interchangeably on syringes and IV equipment. A medical teaspoon is defined as exactly 5 mL. Syringe volumes are always stated in mL or cc. Never convert medical dosages using household teaspoons, which are typically 4–6 mL depending on the spoon.
