How to use this tool

1. Click "Start Camera" and allow camera access when prompted.
2. Read the resolution, quality, aspect ratio, megapixels, and active camera label. Reported frame rate is the browser and driver setting sampled at stream start, not a live measured FPS.
3. Use the device selector to switch between cameras if you have more than one.
4. Use Size and Zoom to adjust the preview, Mirror for selfie framing, Grid for composition, Freeze to pause the preview, and Full Screen for a larger view. Brightness and contrast change the preview only.
5. Choose Snapshot to download a PNG when needed. It honors horizontal mirroring, but does not bake brightness or contrast into the image. Click "Stop Camera" when done.

What does the webcam test check?

The test shows a live preview and reads the active camera track's resolution, quality tier, aspect ratio, megapixels, and label when the browser exposes one. If no label is available, the readout says "Unknown camera" instead of showing a device identifier. A device selector lets you switch cameras when more than one is available.

Understanding the camera settings

The reported frame rate comes from the browser and camera driver's MediaTrackSettings value sampled when the stream starts. For example, a reported value of 29.97 is displayed as 30 fps. This is not a live count of frames delivered to the preview; lighting, browser load, and the camera can change actual playback. Resolution is the reported width and height; the Quality name is a pixel-size tier calculated from those dimensions, not a rating of the lens or image sharpness.

Preview controls and snapshots

Mirror flips the preview horizontally to show the familiar selfie view. Turning Mirror off shows the natural orientation other people generally see on a video call. Grid adds a rule-of-thirds overlay, Freeze pauses the preview, and Full Screen expands it for inspection. Brightness and contrast sliders change the on-page preview only. Snapshot downloads a PNG only when requested; it honors horizontal mirroring, but does not bake the CSS brightness or contrast adjustments into the image.

Common reasons a webcam might not work

• Camera permission was denied in the browser - click the camera icon in the address bar to reset it.
• Another application (Zoom, Teams, OBS) is using the camera - close it first.
• Outdated or missing camera drivers on Windows.
• Browser does not support getUserMedia - use an up-to-date Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari.

Your camera feed never leaves your device

The preview and camera settings are processed in your browser. Camera frames are not uploaded or recorded. The tool creates a PNG snapshot only when you request a download, and that file is saved directly to your device.

Permission management guide

• Chrome: click the camera/lock icon in the address bar -> Site settings -> Camera -> Allow.
• Firefox: click the camera icon or lock icon in the address bar -> Permissions -> use camera -> Allow.
• Safari: go to Safari menu -> Settings for This Website -> Camera -> Allow.
• Edge: click the lock icon in the address bar -> Site permissions -> Camera -> Allow.

If you accidentally blocked camera access, clearing the site permission and reloading the page will prompt you again.

Multi-camera selection

If your computer has multiple cameras (built-in + USB, or front/rear on a tablet), a device selector lets you choose which one to test. On some browsers, you may need to grant permission a second time when switching cameras. If a newly connected USB webcam doesn’t appear in the list, try reloading the page.
