How Wi-Fi QR Codes Work

The QR code encodes a WIFI: URI that contains the SSID, password, and security type. Modern Android and iOS devices can read this URI directly from the camera app and offer to join the network automatically.

Privacy

Your Wi-Fi credentials are used only to generate the QR code image in your browser. Nothing is transmitted to any server.

Security type guide

Security typeRecommendation
WPA3Newest standard; most resistant to offline dictionary attacks. Use if your router supports it.
WPA2Current standard; strong AES encryption. Recommended for most home and business networks.
WEPDeprecated and easily cracked. Never use WEP - upgrade your router.
No password (open)Appropriate only for intentional public hotspots with a captive portal.

Hidden SSID note

Hiding your SSID (disabling broadcast) does not meaningfully improve security. Devices searching for the hidden network broadcast its name in probe requests, making it discoverable with standard wireless scanning tools. A hidden SSID is still visible to anyone running Wireshark or similar tools. Rely on strong WPA2/WPA3 authentication rather than SSID hiding.

QR code placement tips

  • Print at a minimum size of 2 × 2 cm for reliable scanning.
  • Mount near your router, entrance, or on a guest info sheet.
  • Laminate the printout to protect it from moisture and wear.
  • For guest networks, set a separate password and regenerate the QR code whenever you change it.
