How area conversion works

All conversions use square meters as the base unit. The input is converted to square meters first, then divided by the target unit's factor. Factors are derived from the exact international definitions of the meter, inch, and yard.

For a rectangle, the helper multiplies length by width after converting both measurements to meters, so its result is in square meters. It uses one linear unit for both sides and is meant for rectangular floors, walls, patios, and plots; irregular rooms and other shapes need their own measurements or geometry formulas.

Acres, hectares, and land measurement

The acre is the most common unit of land area in the United States and the United Kingdom. One acre is defined as 43,560 square feet, or 4,046.86 square meters. An acre is roughly the area of an American football field excluding the end zones.

The hectare (ha) is the metric equivalent used in most of the world for agricultural and land-use purposes. One hectare equals 10,000 m² (a square 100 m × 100 m) and 2.47105 acres. Large farms, forests, and national parks are typically measured in hectares or square kilometers.

An are (a) is the smaller metric land unit between square meters and hectares: 1 a is exactly 100 m², or a square 10 m × 10 m, and 100 a make 1 ha. A square decimeter (dm²) is 0.01 m², so 100 dm² make 1 m². These units are useful when a measurement is too large for square meters or too small for hectares.

To quickly estimate: multiply square feet by 0.093 (or divide by 10.764) to get square meters. For the reverse, multiply square meters by 10.764.
