How it works

The whole-day count compares calendar dates in your device's local time zone, so it stays aligned with the date shown in your calendar. The anniversary date determines the age you are turning and the weekday displayed for your next birthday. For example, a February 29 birthday uses February 28 in a common year; the date shown by the calculator follows that convention.

After you calculate, the optional live clock counts down to midnight at the start of the next birthday in your current time zone. Its seconds measure elapsed time, while the separate whole-day result counts local calendar days. Daylight-saving changes can make a local day 23 or 25 hours, so the two displays may not change in lockstep around those transitions. Turn Live off to pause the clock while keeping the age and whole-day result visible.

The year timeline spans the most recent birthday anniversary to the next one. Those dates can be 365 or 366 calendar days apart, depending on whether the interval includes February 29. Its marker shows the elapsed share of that actual interval, which makes the progress bar accurate in leap years as well as common years.

Birthdays and time zones

The countdown uses your device's local time zone. If you were born in a different country or your birthday falls near midnight, the date may appear to differ by one day in another time zone. For example, if your birthday starts at midnight in Tokyo, it is still the previous day in New York City (a 14-hour difference). The calculation always anchors to your local clock, so share results with that context in mind.

The most common birthday in the United States is September 9th - roughly 9 months after the holiday season in late December.
February 29th is the rarest birthday because the date occurs only in leap years. People born on leap day may choose their preferred celebration date in other years.
September is the most common birth month in the US, UK, and many other countries in the northern hemisphere.
