Copyright notice format
The internationally recognized copyright notice format is: © [Year] [Name]. All rights reserved.
Examples:
© 2024 Jane Smith. All rights reserved.© 2024 Acme PhotographyPhoto © 2024 John Doe
The © symbol (or the word "Copyright") combined with the year and owner's name satisfies the notice requirement in most Berne Convention countries. Note that copyright exists automatically when a work is created; the notice reinforces it and makes infringement claims cleaner.
Visible vs. invisible watermarks
The two approaches serve different purposes:
- Visible watermarks (what this tool creates): immediately visible text or logo overlays. They deter casual copying and clearly assert ownership, but can be cropped out or removed with photo editing software if the watermark is near the edge.
- Invisible / steganographic watermarks: embed data imperceptibly in the pixel values. They survive cropping and moderate editing, but require specialized software to detect. Tools like Digimarc provide commercial invisible watermarking. Invisible watermarks are used in stock photography, film distribution, and document tracking.
For casual social media protection, a centered semi-transparent visible watermark is the most practical deterrent.
