Countries using this numbering system

The South Asian numbering system (lakh/crore) is used in:

• India: official in all government documents and financial reporting
• Pakistan: used in media, banking, and government budgets
• Bangladesh: used throughout finance and government
• Nepal: used alongside Nepali numbering conventions
• Sri Lanka: used in Sinhala and Tamil language contexts

Written number format

In the South Asian system, commas are placed differently from the Western system:

• The first comma appears after the thousands (3 digits from right): 1,000
• Subsequent commas appear every 2 digits: 10,00,000 (ten lakh = 1 million)
• Examples:
  • 1,00,000 = 1 lakh = 100,000
  • 10,00,000 = 10 lakh = 1,000,000 (1 million)
  • 1,00,00,000 = 1 crore = 10,000,000 (10 million)
  • 1,00,00,00,00,000 = 1 lakh crore = 1,000,000,000,000 (1 trillion)

The Indian numbering system

India uses a different grouping convention from the Western system. After the first three digits, numbers are grouped in twos rather than threes.

This system is used in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. Financial news and government budgets in these countries express figures in lakh and crore.
