How to use the tier list maker

Add items to the item pool at the bottom, then drag and drop them into the tier rows (S, A, B, C, D, or custom tiers). Rearrange items within a tier to indicate relative ranking within that level. Rename or recolor tiers to fit your theme. Export your finished tier list as an image to share.

What are tier lists for?

Tier lists started in the competitive gaming community (especially fighting games) as a way to rank characters by competitive viability. The format has since spread to ranking almost anything: movies, foods, albums, sports teams, historical figures, and more.

S-tier ranking convention

The traditional tier labels come from Japanese gaming culture: S (“Superior” or simply the top tier), followed by A, B, C, D, and F. “S-tier” has entered broader pop culture as a synonym for “exceptional” or “best-in-class.”

Tier label customization

You are not limited to the default S/A/B/C/D labels. Common customizations include:

  • Rename tiers: "Must watch" / "Good" / "Average" / "Skip" for movie rankings.
  • Add or remove tiers: use just 3 tiers for simple rankings (Top / Middle / Bottom), or add up to 8+ tiers for fine-grained differentiation.
  • Change tier colors: keep the iconic rainbow gradient or set custom brand colors for team presentations.

Sharing your tier list

Use the Export as Image button to download your tier list as a PNG. Optimal dimensions for common platforms:

  • Reddit: PNG at full width; keep the image under 20 MB.
  • Twitter / X: images display well up to 1200×675 px (16:9 ratio).
  • Discord: embeds up to 400 px wide in most themes; wider images open in lightbox.

Community tier list resources

Tier lists thrive in competitive gaming communities. Some well-known examples that shaped the format:

  • Super Smash Bros.: one of the most-debated tier lists, updated after every major tournament season and patch.
  • Fighting game tier lists: Street Fighter, Tekken, and Mortal Kombat communities publish and hotly contest character rankings.
  • Pop culture rankings: film critics, music fans, and sports communities have adopted the tier list format as a visually shareable alternative to numbered lists.
