Standard drywall sizes
- 4×8 ft sheets: most common; 32 sq ft per sheet.
- 4×12 ft sheets: fewer seams for taller walls; 48 sq ft per sheet.
- Thickness: 1/2" (standard walls/ceilings), 5/8" (fire-rated, garage/basement), 1/4" (curved surfaces).
Coverage estimate
Calculate total wall area, subtract openings (doors ~20 sq ft, windows ~15 sq ft each), then add a 10–15% waste factor for cuts and mistakes. Divide by 32 (sheet sq ft) to get sheet count. Round up to the next whole number.
Materials per 100 sq ft of drywall
- ~4 lbs of drywall screws (1-5/8" for 1/2" drywall)
- ~200 ft of joint tape
- ~1 gallon of joint compound (all-purpose)
