About Whack-a-Mole

Whack-a-Mole is a classic arcade reaction game. Moles pop up randomly and you must click or tap them before they disappear. The game tests hand-eye coordination and reaction speed.

Scoring

You score one point for each mole successfully whacked before it retreats. Missing a mole (letting it disappear) does not penalize you directly but represents a lost opportunity. The game tracks your total score and the number of misses, so try to maximize hits while minimizing misses.

Controls

  • Desktop: click the mole with your mouse cursor as quickly as possible after it appears.
  • Mobile: tap the mole on the touchscreen.

Difficulty scaling

As the game progresses, moles pop up and retreat faster. The appearance interval shortens and the time each mole stays visible decreases, requiring progressively faster reaction times and broader attention across all holes simultaneously.

Reaction time science

The average human simple reaction time is 200–250 milliseconds. Elite athletes and professional gamers can achieve 150–180 ms. Reaction time is limited by neural signal conduction speed from the retina to the visual cortex (~50 ms), decision processing in the prefrontal cortex, and motor command transmission to the hands. Repetitive training - like playing reaction games - can shorten decision time by building more automatic neural pathways.

History

Whac-A-Mole was invented by Kazuo Bandai in Japan in 1975 and released by TOMY. It was adapted for US arcades by Bob’s Space Racers around the same time. The arcade cabinet version became one of the most globally recognized carnival and arcade games of all time, found in arcades, amusement parks, and family entertainment centres worldwide.
