Word Search Generator - Create Custom Word Searches
Create printable word-search puzzles from your own word list. Words are hidden in all 8 directions. Free, instant, 100% client-side.
10 x 10 up to 30 x 30
How to use
- Enter the words you want hidden in the puzzle, one per line (or comma-separated).
- Choose a grid size - larger grids accommodate more words and add more filler letters.
- Click Generate to create the puzzle. Words are placed horizontally, vertically, and diagonally in forward or backward directions.
- To mark a found word, click the first letter then click (or drag to) the last letter. The word highlights when found.
Tips for creating great word searches
- Choose a theme: themed word searches (animals, countries, food, vocabulary sets) are more engaging than random word lists.
- Vary word lengths: a mix of short (4–5 letters) and long (8–10 letters) words creates a balanced difficulty.
- Educational use: word searches are effective vocabulary practice tools. Seeing a word multiple times in different orientations reinforces spelling and recognition.
- Print-ready: use your browser’s print function to get a clean printed version for classroom or family use.
Interesting fact
Word searches were invented by Norman E. Gibat, who published the first word search puzzle in a Selenby Digest advertisement in 1968 in Oklahoma. Unlike crosswords, word searches require no wordplay or definitions, making them accessible to any age or reading level. Cognitive scientists use word search variants to study visual search strategies and attentional focus.
Grid size guidance
| Grid size | Recommended words | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 10 × 10 | 8–12 words, 4–6 letters each | Good for young children |
| 15 × 15 | 15–20 words | Standard difficulty |
| 20 × 20 | 25+ words | Challenging; avoid overcrowding |
Overcrowding leads to words that are impossible to place; when word count exceeds grid capacity the generator may skip some words.
Difficulty tuning
- Easy: horizontal and vertical forward directions only. Good for early readers.
- Medium: add diagonal directions for additional challenge.
- Hard: enable backward directions (left, up, and diagonal-reverse). For adults and teens.
Educational applications
- Language learning: vocabulary reinforcement through repeated visual exposure to target words.
- Elementary spelling practice: searching for spelling words combines motor engagement with visual recognition.
- Cognitive rehabilitation: used in occupational therapy to train visual scanning and sustained attention.
- Print-and-use: the browser print function produces a clean, ready-to-use printout with an answer key on a separate page.
