Engagement Rate Calculator - Social Media ER Formula
Calculate engagement rate by followers or by reach. Supports Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, X, LinkedIn, and Facebook with benchmark bands for each platform.
Likes + comments + shares + saves
Engagement rate formula
ER by followers: (Total Engagements ÷ Followers) × 100
ER by reach: (Total Engagements ÷ Reach) × 100
What counts as an engagement?
Engagements typically include likes, comments, shares, saves, and reactions depending on the platform. Reach-based ER is more relevant for evaluating content quality; follower-based ER is more useful for comparing accounts over time.
Industry benchmarks by platform
| Platform | Low | Average | Good | Excellent |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Instagram (personal) | <1% | 1–3% | 3–6% | 6%+ |
| Instagram (brand) | <0.5% | 0.5–1% | 1–2% | 2%+ |
| TikTok | <3% | 3–6% | 6–10% | 10%+ |
| Twitter / X | <0.5% | 0.5–1% | 1–2% | 2%+ |
| <1% | 2–5% | 5–8% | 8%+ |
Calculation variants
Three common ways to measure engagement each tell a different story:
- By followers: (engagements ÷ followers) × 100. Best for tracking growth of an account over time. Does not account for organic reach on a given post.
- By reach: (engagements ÷ reach) × 100. Best for evaluating content quality - shows what percentage of people who actually saw the post took action.
- By impressions: (engagements ÷ impressions) × 100. Useful when a post is shown multiple times to the same users (e.g., paid ads or boosted posts).
Declining engagement trends
Average engagement rates across social platforms have declined significantly over the past decade. Algorithm changes (prioritizing paid content), increased content volume, and shifting user behavior have all contributed. Benchmark comparisons should use current industry reports rather than figures from several years ago.
