Ad metric formulas

  • CPM = (Spend ÷ Impressions) × 1,000
  • CPC = Spend ÷ Clicks
  • CTR = (Clicks ÷ Impressions) × 100
  • CPA = Spend ÷ Conversions
  • ROAS = Revenue ÷ Spend

How to use this calculator

Enter any combination of metrics you know. The tool derives all computable values automatically and highlights them in blue. You can enter derived metrics (like CPM) to reverse-calculate primary values (like spend).

What each metric tells you

  • CPM (Cost per Mille): measures reach efficiency. A lower CPM means you reach more people per dollar. Optimize for CPM when your goal is brand awareness.
  • CPC (Cost per Click): measures click cost. Optimize for CPC when your goal is driving traffic to a landing page.
  • CPA (Cost per Acquisition): measures the cost to acquire one customer or conversion. The most business-relevant metric for direct response campaigns.
  • ROAS (Return on Ad Spend): revenue ÷ ad spend. A ROAS of 4x means you earn $4 in revenue for every $1 spent on ads. Optimize for ROAS in e-commerce campaigns.

Viewable impressions (vCPM)

A served impression is counted when an ad is delivered to a browser, even if the user never scrolls to see it. A viewable impression (IAB standard: at least 50% of the ad in view for at least 1 second for display; 2 seconds for video) is a higher-quality signal. vCPM (cost per 1,000 viewable impressions) is a more meaningful metric than served-impression CPM for measuring brand exposure. Most major platforms report viewability rates alongside served impressions.
