Why image dimensions matter for social media
Each platform displays images differently. Uploading images with incorrect dimensions can result in unwanted cropping, blurry rendering, or important content appearing outside the safe zone. Using the recommended dimensions ensures your images always look their best.
Tips for designing social media assets
- Design at 2× or 3× the minimum recommended size so images appear crisp on high-DPI (Retina) displays.
- Keep important content (faces, logos, text) within the centre safe area to avoid cropping on different devices.
- Keep file sizes under 1–2 MB to reduce upload time and compression artefacts.
Platform image format guidance
| Platform | Recommended format | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| X / Twitter | PNG or JPEG | WebP supported; GIF supported for animations |
| JPEG | PNG converted to JPEG on upload; no GIF | |
| PNG or JPEG | PNG for text/logos; JPEG for photos | |
| PNG or JPEG | PNG preferred for graphics; GIF supported | |
| PNG or JPEG | WebP supported; animated GIF not supported | |
| YouTube | PNG or JPEG | Thumbnails; PNG recommended for sharp text |
Safe zone concept
Platforms often display images differently depending on the context (feed, profile, share preview). The "safe zone" is the inner portion of the image that will always be visible regardless of how the platform crops it.
For example, Facebook link preview images use a 1.91:1 aspect ratio on desktop but may be cropped to 1:1 on mobile. Keeping logos, faces, and key text within the center 80% of the frame protects against unexpected cropping.
File size limits
| Platform | Image file size limit | Video size limit |
|---|---|---|
| X / Twitter | 5 MB (PNG/JPEG), 15 MB (GIF) | 512 MB |
| 8 MB | 100 MB (1 min) / 1 GB (Reels) | |
| 4 MB | 10 GB | |
| 8 MB | 5 GB | |
| 20 MB | 2 GB |
