Mental Math Speed Quiz - Arithmetic Under Time Pressure

Sharpen your mental arithmetic with timed addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division questions. Choose difficulty and track your accuracy and speed.

Mental math techniques

  • Left-to-right addition: add the most significant digits first (250 + 348 = 500 + 90 + 8 = 598). Easier to hold in working memory than right-to-left.
  • Multiply by 9: multiply by 10, then subtract the original (9 × 7 = 70 − 7 = 63).
  • Multiply by 5: divide by 2, then multiply by 10 (5 × 24 = 12 × 10 = 120).
  • Squaring numbers ending in 5: multiply tens digit by (tens digit + 1), append 25. (35² = 3 × 4 = 12, append 25 -> 1,225).
  • Percentage trick: 15% of 80 = 10% of 80 (8) + half of that (4) = 12.

Why practice matters

Mental math builds numerical fluency - the ability to reason about numbers without paper. Regular practice improves estimation, number sense, and reduces cognitive load when working with data.

Vedic math tricks

  • Squaring two-digit numbers (Duplex method): for 47², split into (40 + 7). Then 40² + 2×(40×7) + 7² = 1,600 + 560 + 49 = 2,209. For numbers near 50, use (50 + n)² = 2,500 + 100n + n².
  • Multiplying by 11: split the two outer digits, sum adjacent digits for middle positions. 53 × 11 = 5_(5+3)_3 = 583. If the middle sum exceeds 9, carry: 78 × 11 = 7_(7+8)_8 = 7_(15)_8 -> 858.
  • Casting out nines (error check): add all digits of each factor until you get a single digit, multiply those, reduce to a single digit, and compare to the same process on the product. If they don't match, there's a calculation error.

Estimation strategies

  • Rounding to benchmark numbers: round 493 × 21 to 500 × 20 = 10,000 before doing a precise calculation.
  • Benchmark fractions: ½ = 0.5, ⅓ ≈ 0.333, ¼ = 0.25, ⅛ = 0.125 - memorizing these speeds up percentage and ratio work.
  • Front-end estimation: add or multiply only the leading digits first to get an order-of-magnitude sanity check.

World records

Indian mathematician Shakuntala Devi earned the nickname "human computer" - in 1977 she correctly extracted the 23rd root of a 201-digit number in 50 seconds. The annual Mental Calculation World Cup tests competitors on multiplication of 8-digit numbers, calendar calculations, and extracting roots - all performed mentally in timed heats.
