Snake Game - Free Classic Online Snake
Classic snake game - eat apples, grow longer, avoid walls and yourself.
About Snake
Snake is one of the most iconic video games, popularised on early Nokia mobile phones. The player manoeuvres a growing snake around the screen collecting food while avoiding collisions with walls and its own body.
How to play
- Use the arrow keys or WASD to steer the snake.
- On mobile, swipe in the direction you want to move.
- Eat food items to grow longer and increase your score. The game ends when the snake hits a wall or its own body.
- The snake speeds up as it grows, increasing the challenge.
Scoring
Each food item collected adds to your score. Longer snakes are harder to navigate, so higher scores represent both good reflexes and smart planning.
History
The snake concept originates with Blockade, an arcade game released by Gremlin Industries in 1976. Players controlled lines that left a trail, trying to force the opponent to collide with a wall. Many clones followed throughout the late 1970s and 1980s.
Nokia popularized the modern snake format with a pre-installed version on the Nokia 6110 mobile phone in 1997, created by Taneli Armanto. It is estimated that over 350 million Nokia devices included Snake, making it one of the most played video games in history.
Strategy tips
- Spiral inward: as the snake grows, follow the walls in a tight coiling pattern to maximize space usage and avoid self-collision.
- Follow your tail: when the board is mostly full, your tail will be vacating space that you can safely follow into, preventing dead-ends.
- Don't chase corners: avoid driving into corners with limited exit options - this is the most common way to get boxed in.
